With the lights off I can see only the unmoving green and yellow and red digital displays of appliances, islands rigid and glowing in the void. Thrown into violent relief against the dark, they take on a noticeability elevated far beyond their mundane diurnal presence.
The first thing I notice is the coffee maker, with its digital analog clock.
"My parents drink too much coffee," I think, and a round white spot hangs in my vision when I turn away.
